We knew sitting at a desk all day could have a dangerous effect on one's posture and even overall health but we didn't know our bums were in the firing line as well!

Physical therapist Dan Giordano explained in a recent interview that sitting down all day effectively ruins all the hard work you've put into your squat routine. He said that when you sit down all day, ‘your glutes shut down’ causing a negative impact on not just your bum but your entire body. 

Giordano said that inhibited glutes don't work properly and over time this will make them become weaker. 

Sitting can also change the shape of your bum with Giordano stating that he's seen clients that have gone from active jobs to desk jobs and ended up with flatter bums as a result. 

Sitting down all day also means your more susceptible to cellulite. Being inactive all day means your blood won’t be pumped properly around the body, causing a lack of blood flow to the skin, which then causes a loss of collagen. Cue cellulite. 

There is an way to counteract this though. You need to take a stand. Literally. Take regular breaks from your chair, make sure your posture is in check, and make sure you’re doing targeted workouts. You can also ensure your glutes stay active during the day by clenching and releasing in your seat.
