A man dressed as an elderly lady in a wheelchair was arrested yesterday after he threw cake across the world renowned portrait by Leonardo DaVinci. One Twitter user remarked that he attempted to smash the bulletproof glass protecting the masterpiece.
If you've ever been to see the Renaissance painter's most famous portrait at the Louvre, you'll know that there's a tonne of protective measures in place to stop anything like a cake smearing from happening to the precious piece.
However, Sky News reports that one man got close enough to whip what looks like a cream spongecake across the painting by "simulating a disability" using a wheelchair. He masqueraded as an elderly lady by wearing a black wig and lipstick.
Not only does this abuse a measure designed for inclusivity in the museum, but it's an offence that saw the man get tackled by security immediatly. Once throwing the confection, he tossed roses on the ground.
Footage of the incident is swirling online, with one video of the alleged perpetrator telling spectators in French, "Think of the planet… there are people who are destroying the planet, think about that … That's why I did it".
This has led to speculation around the purpose of the incident with those reporting imagining that there's a link to climate action.
Luckily for Mona, there was no damage done to the painting. But this isn't the first time she's suffered. She was stolen from the Louvre once in 1911 and has been vandalised several times.
