Maria Alice Arida is a Brazilian director with an M.F.A. in directing at the American Film Institute (AFI). Before moving to the US to attend AFI, Maria developed her career in Brazil where she graduated in filmmaking at Faculdade Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP). Upon graduating, she worked as an assistant director for renowned directors including Hector Babenco (Academy Award nominee for KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN) and Eduardo Coutinho (EDIFÍCIO MASTER). Maria has directed six short films in genres such as thriller, horror and drama, including SOLO, her last film made in Brazil, which has played at the Mostra International de Cinema Fantástico de Goiânia, Mostra de Cinema Feminista and won the jury prize at festival 3 Margens: Festival Latino-Americano de Cinema.
