Joseph Campanella
ActorJoe began his career as a sportscaster and stock theatre actor/ director/ producer in
Pennsylvania. He moved to New York as a newscaster/producer for the Voice of America and
classical music announcer for WQXR, NY, while studying acting with world famous Lee
Strasberg. After many roles in stock and Off-Broadway (including an Obie nomination),
Joe became part of the ""Golden Age of TV"" going from stunts to bit parts to featured leads
in Studio One, Kraft Theatre and many others.
After a few small roles, featured roles on Broadway followed, including a Tony
nomination for his work opposite Henry Fonda in Garson Kanin's A Gift of Time.
Other roles led to his first Broadway musical opposite Judy Holliday in Hotspot, and his
first starring role in a primetime series, Herbert Brodkin's THE NURSES.
California beckoned with many guest star roles and series. So, he and his wife,
singer/ dance/actress Jill Bartholomew and their third son in three years, moved West.
Series included MANNIX, THE BOLD ONES, ONE NIGHT A DAY, DYNASTY II and THE COLBYS (opposite Barbara Stanwyck). Daytime series include THE GUIDING LIGHT (three years),
DAYS OF OUR LIVES (four years) and recurring on THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. More
than 1,000 TV appearances have resulted in three Emmy nominations. Film roles include
METEOR (Sean Connery), A SHOW OF FORCE (Amy Irving), MY BODY, MY CHILD
(opposite Vanessa Redgrave), and many others.
Joe's unique voice and phrasing have led him to become an in-demand commercial and
industrial spokesman and a leading narrator of many award-winning documentaries, including
Theodore H. White's CHINA: THE ROOTS OF MADNESS and his MAKING OF THE
PRESIDENT series, 24 National Geographic episodes, 30 Jacques Costeau Specials and
many others.
He has narrated over 50 Books-On-Tape, including works by Robert Ludlum, Irving
Wallace, Martin Cruz Smith, Vincent Bugliosi and Robert MacNamara.
Father of seven sons, Joe has been active in many child and youth programs and charities. He
was knighted by the Italian government for this and cultural services. He is a Cavaliere
Con Merito (Knight with Honor). He has received many honors including Father of the
Year and Man of the Year from the City of Hope, UNICO and others.
He has a BA degree from Manhattan College with graduate work in Drama at Columbia
University. Born in NYC in a multi-cultural neighborhood, he spoke Italian before he
spoke English, was in plays in French, and early developed an ear for accents and dialects.
He also saw three and a half years of war service as a naval officer.
Recent credits include the films THE TREASURE OF THE BEAR; THE
GLASS CAGE (Eric Roberts); and RACE WITH DESTINY, THE JAMES DEAN STORY.
Starring roles include the first THE NEW ROCKFORD FILES, WALKER, TEXAS RANGER, PACIFIC BLUE (recurring), BAYWATCH (as David Hasselhoff's father).
