2001 Academy Award nominee Caleb Deschanel is co-founder of Dark Light Pictures and a director and cinematographer of extraordinary accomplishment. Deschanel attended Johns Hopkins University, the University of Southern California and the American Film Institute. He later apprenticed under cinematographer Gordon Willis.

Among Deschanel''''s early film credits are THE BLACK STALLION and BEING THERE. He received consecutive Academy Award nominations in 1983 and 1984 for THE RIGHT STUFF and THE NATURAL. In 1982, he made his directorial debut with THE ESCAPE ARTIST starring Raul Julia, Griffin O''''Neal, and Joan Hackett. He also directed CRUSOE starring Aidan Quinn, and multiple episodes of TWIN PEAKS. Deschanel photographed Columbia Pictures'''' FLY AWAY HOME in 1996 for which he was nominated for Oustanding Achievement in Cinematography by The American Society of Cinematographers and Best Cinematography by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Most recently Deschanel has photographed ANNA AND THE KING and THE PATRIOT, starring Mel Gibson.



Deschanel has enjoyed equal success directing and photographing commercials where his work is noteworthy for its cinematic quality and striking visuals. His recent work has included campaigns for Microsoft, UPS, Nestle, Perrier, Carnation, Max Factor, and McDonalds, as well spots for Callaway, Vidal Sassoon and Sprint.
