Becky Smith
Director | WriterBecky Smith is an independent filmmaker based in Los Angeles. She has
written and directed award-winning documentaries and short narrative films,
as well as stage plays. She received the California Arts Council
Screenwriting Award and a Squaw Valley Screenwriting Grant for the
feature screenplay, THE BLUE SEASON.
Ms. Smith's most recent production is a half-hour narrative film DEATH BY VERTIGO. Ms. Smith was one of only six women selected to participate
in the American Film Institute's 1996 Directing Workshop for
Women, where the script was developed. DEATH BY VERTIGO was chosen
for main competition in the Montreux Film Festival, Montreux,
Switzerland, in April 1997. It was presented outside competition by Sony
Pictures at the Cannes Film Festival, May 1997.
In 1995 Ms. Smith wrote and directed CAPTURED LIGHT, an hour-long
documentary about the invention of photography for The History
Channel.
In 1994 Ms. Smith wrote, produced, and directed IN THE GAME, an hour-
long documentary exploring Title IX's effect in college women's athletics.
IN THE GAME aired nationally on PBS's FRONTLINE in March, 1994
and received outstanding national reviews. It received the 1995
Commendation Award from Women in Radio and Television for ""Best
Single Television Documentary"". It was also nominated for the prestigious
1995 IDA Award for ""best documentaries of 1994"".
Ms. Smith has been a Visiting Professor at UCLA in the Department of
Film & Television since 1995. She received her Masters Degree in Film
from Stanford University in 1984.
