It seems kind of odd to think of it, but there was once upon a time where Tom Hanks was doing low-stakes comedies like 'The Money Pit', 'Dragnet', and 'Turner & Hooch'.
In the heady days of 1989, before his two consecutive Oscar wins for 'Forrest Gump' and 'Philadelphia', Hanks starred in the action-comedy that saw him paired with a French mastiff to investigate a murder. The movie was originally supposed to be directed by Henry Winkler (yes, the Fonz) before it eventually fell to Roger Spottiswoode, the guy who did such hits as '48 Hrs.' and... 'Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!'.
Anyway, 'Turner & Hooch' was a big deal for Touchstone and had paid a then-unheard of $1 million for the script, and were eager enough to even attempt a TV series spinoff with Thomas F. Wilson, best known as Biff Tannen from 'Back to the Future'. Anyway, that pilot went nowhere, but now with the dawn of streaming services, the time is right to pair a smooth-talking cop with a French mastiff once again.
THR reports that Disney+ are ordering a TV series reboot of the movie, with Josh Peck to take on the role made famous by Tom Hanks. It's not yet known if the pooch named Hooch will be a French mastiff like the original, but the basic premise is the same. Buttoned-up US Marshall Scott Turner finds himself partnered with a dog, finds out he needs the partner, and so on.
'Turner & Hooch' is the latest semi-recognisable '80s / '90s movie to get a TV series reboot on Disney+. 1993's 'The Sandlot' is also due for a TV series reboot at some point, and 'High School Musical' is also getting a TV series spinoff as well. No air date has been set for 'Turner & Hooch', but it's kind of telling that unless you're over 30, most people's entree to the movie is from a recurring joke from 'Scrubs'.
