As we previously reported, Netflix is shelving House Of Cards following the sixth season in light of revelations concerning historical sexual misconduct against Kevin Spacey.
The move came as a shock as allegations against Spacey were less than 24 hours old, but it now seems like the streaming service had already planned the show's end after the sixth season and is moving quickly to fill the gap left in their schedule by the show's imminent demise. Variety is now reporting that a number of House Of Cards spinoffs are in the early stages of development, with one concept set to focus exclusively on Doug Stamper's career. Played by veteran character actor Michael Kelly, the character has been a feature in the series since the beginning and has become a fan favourite.
Two other concepts - which have not been disclosed - are also being discussed. Meanwhile, the sixth season - which is currently in production - is expected to continue as planned with Spacey's involvement still a factor. Late last night, the former showrunner of House Of Cards, Beau Willimon, released a short statement about Spacey's allegations:
"Anthony Rapp's story is deeply troubling. During the time I worked with Kevin Spacey on House of Cards, I neither witnessed nor was aware of any inappropriate behaviour on set or off. That said, I take reports of such behaviour seriously and this is no exception. I feel for Mr. Rapp and I support his courage."
Spacey has made no further comments since his statement last night.
