According to Disney exec Bob Iger, it's looking likely that more of their movies which were previously slated to have a theatrical release will be heading to their streaming platform over the coming months. Which may mean bad news for fans hoping to see 'The New Mutants' on the big screen...
While not giving too much away, Disney chairman Bob Iger has said that more movie titles are on the way to Disney+. The news follows Walt Disney Studios' announcement recently that Irish author Eoin Colfer's blockbuster 'Artemis Fowl' would be arriving online rather than receiving a theatrical release this May. According to the exec, the same fate may be in store for other titles, turning them into Disney+ movies.
Due to the current worldwide situation, many of Disney's tentpole releases such as 'Black Widow' and 'Mulan' have been postponed until later dates, with some of Marvel's movies moving down a full year. Iger said: "There are some we’ve decided to put on Disney+. We already announced one, 'Artemis Fowl', that would have been released in theatres. Others we’ve simply delayed.
"In terms of movies going ahead after 'Artemis', there may be a few more that we end up putting directly onto Disney+, but for the most part, a lot of the big tentpole Disney films, we’ll simply wait for slots. In some cases, we’ve announced new ones already, but later on in the calendar."
So, Iger's comments point to all of their Marvel and Disney originals staying put, slotting into various other theatrical releases later down the line. However, for the likes of Fox's 'The New Mutants', which has been delayed more times than we can count, at this point the movie will likely land on Disney+ at some point in the future. There are a number of other Fox titles which may fall into the non-tentpole movie category and make the move to digital, such as 'The Woman in the Window' with Amy Adams and Julianne Moore.
