While Queen Elizabeth is a fan of Netflix series ‘The Crown’ – as so many of us are – it turns out that she was left “sad and annoyed” by one particular episode in the show.
The offending scene takes place in the second season’s ninth episode titled "Paterfamilias", in which the Queen is shown arguing with Prince Philip about which school to send Prince Charles to.
They eventually settle on Philip's old education centre Gordonstoun School, despite the Queen's preference of Eton.
Later in the episode, viewers see Charles subjected to tough school life, including running in the bitter cold and being bullied, receiving no sympathy from his father.
“The Queen realises that many who watch The Crown take it as an accurate portrayal of the Royal Family and she cannot change that,” a source told The Express. “But I can convey that she was upset by the way Prince Philip is depicted as being a father insensitive to his son’s well-being.
“She was particularly annoyed at a scene in which Philip has no sympathy for a plainly upset Charles while he is flying him home from Scotland. That simply did not happen.”
Claire Foy recently won an Emmy for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth (and indeed the "Paterfamilias" episode earned Stephen Dalry an Emmy for Best Directing). Olivia Colman replaces her as the lead for the show's forthcoming third season, which will also feature Helena Bonham Carter, Tobias Menzies and Josh O'Connor in the cast.
