Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston are battling more than just their feelings for each other - there's something ominous on the horizon too.
'The Essex Serpent' will see an all-star cast wage war against a mystical presence - oh, and some pent-up period drama Jane Austen-type feelings.
Claire Danes ('Romeo + Juliet') and Tom Hiddleston ('Loki') lead the new limited series based on Sarah Perry’s bestselling novel, which is set in a Victorian England overrun by a mythical creature. Danes stars as Londoner Cora Seaborne, a widow who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mysterious serpent. She forms a surprising bond of science and scepticism with the local pastor (Hiddleston).
However, tragedy strikes, and the Essex locals accuse her of attracting the creature. She and the pastor also look like they're going to be wrapped up in some rather personal eyebrow-raising activities. Thes Adam and Eve vibes are off the charts on this one.
Joining the actors in the series are also Clémence Poésy ('In Bruges'), Frank Dillane ('Fear The Walking Dead') and Hayley Squires ('In The Earth'). The series is directed by BAFTA Award nominee Clio Barnard and written by BAFTA Award nominee Anna Symon.
Here's our first look at 'The Essex Serpent' on Apple TV+, which looks like a must-watch with the two Hollywood actors leading the show.
This isn't the first time Victorian England has been given the mystery/thriller treatment of late. Netflix released 'The Irregulars' in 2021 to very poor reviews, leading to its cancellation; while 'The Nevers' on Sky and NOW fared a little better - but has still not been confirmed for a second season just yet. The second half of season one will premiere later this year.
Apple TV+ normally eyes high-quality releases - earlier this year it was the first streaming service to secure a Best Picture win at the Oscars for 'CODA'.
'The Essex Serpent' begins on Apple TV+ on Friday, May 13.
