A 'Splinter Cell' title is finally in the works - but its not what we were expecting.
Derek Kolstad, one of the creator's of the 'John Wick' franchise starring Keanu Reeves, will write and executive produce a 'Splinter Cell' TV series in a collaboration between streaming giant Netflix and video game company Ubisoft.
The series will be an animation, following the former U.S. Navy SEAL Sam Fisher. Recruited by the NSA to work for the mysterious Third Echelon division, the protagonist gets involved in various stealth and black ops missions throughout the video game series.
According to Variety, the new anime series will initially run for two seasons, with 16 episodes ordered. The stealth-action series launched back in 2002 with its first title 'Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell', which spawned seven sequels. The most recent addition, 'Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist' arrived on past-generation consoles Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii U, and PC back in 2013, with incredibly favourable reviews.
The year before 'Blacklist' was released however, 'Venom' and 'The Dark Knight Rises' star Tom Hardy was signed up to play the lead role of Sam Fisher in a blockbuster movie. Thankfully, the movie didn't see the light of day - but that didn't stop Ubisoft creating another failed video game adaptation in Michael Fassbender's 'Assasin's Creed'. Failing to do the video game any justice, they've now decided that an anime version of their franchise would be the best bet.
As well as creating the 'John Wick' franchise, Kolstad is also on the writing team for Disney+'s upcoming Marvel series 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier' - which will resume shooting later this year.
