Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson lead the cast in a chilling tale of two black women in New York.
In the 'Passing' trailer, which you can see below, Irene Redfield (Tessa Thompson) and Clare Kendry (Academy Award nominee Ruth Negga) are two women living with a very dangerous secret.
Adapted from the celebrated 1929 novel of the same name by Nella Larsen, the film will tell the story of two black women who are able to "pass" as white during the height of the Harlem Renaissance in late 1920s New York.
After a chance encounter with the former childhood friends, Irene reluctantly allows Clare into her home. Here, Clare meets her husband (André Holland) and family, and soon her larger social circle. However, it eventually becomes apparent that Clare's husband (Alexander Skarsgård) is very different to Irene's. Both women are choosing to live on opposite sides of the colour line.
Having already premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival to high acclaim, 'Passing' is the directorial debut of Rebecca Hall, who has previously been known for her acting work in the likes of 'The Town', 'Iron Man 3' and 'Frost/Nixon'. She was also the writer and producer of the film, with Forest Whitaker, Nine Yang Bongiovi and Margot Hand also attached as producers.
'Passing' will see how these women of colour explore not just racial identity but gender and the responsibilities of motherhood, sexuality and the performance of femininity. The film also stars Bill Camp ('12 Years A Slave'), Gbenga Akinnagbe ('The Wire'), and Antoinette Crowe-Legacy ('Godfather of Harlem').
Since breaking onto the acting scene here in 'Breakfast on Pluto' and 'Love/Hate', Ruth Negga has appeared in numerous films and TV series in Hollywood. 'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' was one of the first major roles, followed by 'Preacher' and 'Warcraft'.
