The latest episode of Jason Sudeikis' comedy series featured a very touching moment for one of the characters. *Spoilers for 'Ted Lasso' season two, episode 10 below.*
'80s pop star Rick Astley has shared his joy at being part of the latest 'Ted Lasso' episode on Apple TV+.
'Never Gonna Give You Up' is a powerhouse of a song, and one which has been around since 1987. Although it has always been a divisive classic, the track gained new traction during the early 2000s when it was used as a meme for countless YouTube videos, duping viewers into thinking they were seeing a trailer for a movie before it was released.
With such romantic lyrics like "Never gonna give you up // Never gonna let you down", the song has proven to be quite the timeless creation, if a little bit repetitive and grating. It's no surprise then that 'Ted Lasso' used the lyrics for an emotional part of its tenth episode.
Titled 'No Weddings and a Funeral', Hannah Waddingham's character Rebecca is told that her father has died. Instead of delivering a eulogy at the funeral, she decides to have everyone in attendance join in in singing 'Never Gonna Give You Up' by the '80s pop star.
The touching moment from the Emmy winner hasn't gone unnoticed by the song's creator, and Rick Astley took to Twitter to praise the 'Ted Lasso' team for using his song at such an opportune time.
He said: "It's taken a little bit of time to process what I think about the latest episode of 'Ted Lasso'. I'm a massive fan of the show and I was just completely blown away with what they did with that song.
"I have to say to Emmy Award-winning Hannah Waddingham, you did an amazing, incredible job and it was so emotional, so moving, and so incredible."
Two more episodes remain in 'Ted Lasso' season two. The comedy series won a total of seven Emmy Awards during this year's ceremony.
