Two Queen-themed series - 'The Crown' and 'The Queen's Gambit' - have been the top watched series on Netflix for weeks now.
Recently we gave you some recommendations for what to watch after 'The Queen's Gambit'. Now we turn to historical drama 'The Crown'.
The series depicts the many events of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. The latest season, its fourth, has garnered particular interest as it depicts the early years of Diana Spencer's (Emma Corrin) marriage into the Royal Family.
If you've binged through the series, you may be wondering, what can I watch next?
Thus we've come up with some recommendations that have links to the show. We've included where you can find them as well.
Diana: In Her Own Words / The Story of Diana - Available on Netflix
If you want to learn more about what happened to Princess Diana, Netflix has packed their library with options. We probably wouldn't recommend the ill-received biopic starring Naomi Watts. But there are some documentary options in TV film 'Diana: In Her Own Words' (which is available only on the streamer only until December 1st), and the two parter 'The Story of Diana'. The tragic end to her life is documented in 'Diana: 7 Days That Shook the World', which is also on Netflix.
The Royal House of Windsor - Available on Netflix
For those who wish to dive further into the history of the Royal Family, 'The Royal House of Windsor' is a six part series on Netflix now. Produced by Channel 4, it documents the history of Britain's ruling dynasty, the Windsors, over the last 100 years. Its starting point is the outbreak of World War I. It has, like the aforementioned Diana documentaries, been the subject of some criticism, as it is felt to be an incomplete account of what occured.
The Favourite - Buy from iTunes, Amazon, Youtube Movies, Google Play
If you want to see Olivia Colman play another royal - in a performance that won her an Oscar - 'The Favourite' is well-worth a watch. Mind you, it's extremely different from 'The Crown' in its tone, alternating between absurdity and hilarity. Colman plays Queen Anne as she rules over England in the early 18th century. Her close friend is Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) who governs the country and cares for her when she's ill. But when a new servant girl called Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, she becomes even closer to the Queen.
The Iron Lady - Rent/Buy from iTunes, Amazon, Youtube Movies, Google Play
Margaret Thatcher: The Iron Lady - Available on Amazon Prime
Emma Corrin's performance in 'The Crown' was the most anticipated of season four. Following that, people couldn't wait to see Gillian Anderson play Margaret Thatcher. Meryl Streep won her most recent Oscar for taking on the British PM so if you want to compare and contrast her and Anderson's performances, we've listed above where to find the biopic. If you have an Amazon Prime prescription, and want to learn more about the political stalwart, you can watch the documentary 'Margaret Thatcher: The Iron Lady.'
Young Victoria - Available on Netflix
If you're in the mood to reimmerse yourself in the world of royalty, costume drama, and romance, check out 'The Young Victoria'. Alongside 'The Devil Wears Prada', the film features an early performance from Emily Blunt that showcases her talent as an actress. The movie takes the blossoming love between the titular queen and Prince Albert (played by Rupert Friend) as its focus. Documentary series 'Queen Victoria and Her Nine Children' is also on Netflix now.
Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Available on Netflix
'The Crown' attracts a certain audience whose go-to films and series are historical costume dramas. Thus aside from 'The Young Victoria', Netflix also has 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' (which depicts Queen Elizabeth I's reign) on offer. Cate Blanchett plays the Queen just beautifully. She's joined by Clive Owen, Geoffrey Rush, Abbie Cornish, and Samantha Morton.
