New Netflix comedy, Atypical, will be released on the streaming platform on August 11th of this year. The show is a coming-of-age tale told from the point of view of Sam, an 18 year old on the Autism spectrum. It will follow him and his family as he navigates High School and tries to develop more independence for himself. In a new clip, taken from the first episode, Sam and his mother Elsa (Jennifer Jason Leigh) discuss the possibility of Sam asking a girl out and going on a date.
Autism has often been portrayed badly on-screen, with ASD characters used as the butt of jokes or comic relief. We're really hopeful this show will offer a realistic portrayal of the condition.
