If you haven't already tuned into 'Tiger King' on Netflix yet - then get cracking. The seven-part documentary series arrived on our screens just in time for practically every streamer in the land to binge on the escapades of various seemingly tiger and animal-loving individuals in America.
The show's primary subject was one man named Joe Exotic, who had a particularly big chip on his shoulder against rival Carole Baskin. Exotic is now in jail, serving a 22-year sentence following details of a plot to execute Baskin emerging. Despite her involvement in the documentary and revealing elements of her traumatic past however, as well as the mysterious disappearance of her ex-husband Don Lewis, Baskin recently slammed the production. She called the Netflix series "salacious and sensational" in a blog post a week ago - but the 'Tiger King' producers have stepped forward to say she willingly took part.
'Tiger King' producer Eric Goode has said: "Carole talked about her personal life, her childhood, abuse from her first and second husband, the disappearance of her ex, Don Lewis. She knew that this was not just about ... it’s not a 'Blackfish' because of the things she spoke about.
"She certainly wasn’t coerced. The other thing I would say about all these people is that there was a lack of intellectual curiosity to really go and understand or even see these animals in the wild.
"Certainly, Carole really had no interest in seeing an animal in the wild... The lack of education, frankly, was really interesting — how they had built their own little utopias and really were only interested in that world and the rules they had created."
Goode's co-producer Rebecca Chaiklin added: "I would just say we were completely forthright with the characters. With any project that goes on for five years, things evolve and change, and we followed it as any good storyteller does. We could have never known when we started this project that it was going to land where it did."
In Baskin's recent blog post in which she attempts to remove dissociate herself from the series, she says the producers "did not care about truth. The unsavory lies are better for getting viewers."
In other 'Tiger King' news, it appears that the Netflix documentary has become so popular that a dramatisation of the events will be heading to our screens in the future. 'Saturday Night Live' comedian Kate McKinnon has been cast as Carole Baskin, which for now remains the only role to have been cast.
Not only that, but the 'Tiger King' producers have hinted that a second series could be on the way too - as the story continues to develop.
