Bad news for if you're sharing your Netflix account with another household using the same password...
It looks like Netflix is testing a new feature which could spark a crackdown on users sharing passwords.
A number of users have reportedly been met with a screen reading: "If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching."
The viewer is then apparently given the option to verify their identity through a code which is sent to the account's owner. They can choose to complete the process later.
Netflix released a statement on the development. It reads: "This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorised to do so."
The streaming service has expressed in the past that they're not comfortable with users sharing their passwords.
According to Netflix's terms of service, account details should "not be shared with individuals beyond your household."
Previously, back in 2016, CEO Reed Hastings said the company had "no plans" on a password sharing crackdown. He said this was because "there's so much legitimate password sharing, like you sharing with your spouse, with your kids."
Other features that Netflix have introduced in recent months include a Top 50 countdown, following the popularity of the Top 10. They also trialled a reintroduction of the shuffle feature.
Following months of lockdown, the streamer announced it January that it now has over 203 million subscribers. This makes it the world’s leading streaming service.
