After a tsunami of criticism online of its lead actor and producer Kevin Spacey, House of Cards has officially been cancelled by Netflix.
The series will still have 13 episodes in 2018, but after that the show will be no more.
“Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey,” the companies said in a joint statement today. “In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”
The first season was a marquee show for Netflix, showcasing its power to attract top actors and directors (David Fincher was heavily involved).
Spacey was today in the news for allegations he attempted to seduce a 14 year old boy in 1986. In his statement apologising, he offically came out as gay - drawing huge criticism for for choosing then to annouce to the world he was living as a gay man.
It will have ran for 6 seasons, with the latest season currently in production.
