As we've opined previously, Netflix really has been the saviour of brainy sci-fi and while 'Mute' and 'The Cloverfield Paradox' may not have been what you'd call critical successes, 'Annihilation' has easily been one of the best sci-fi films released this year.
'Extinction' was purchased by Netflix from Universal in February of this year, with a screenplay written by 'Arrival' scribe Eric Heisserer and directed by Ben Young, who made indie hit 'Hounds Of Love'. There's something of an unusual cast, which includes 'Ant-Man & The Wasp' star Michael Pena, 'Masters Of Sex' alum Lizzy Caplan and Mike Colter, who people will know from Netflix's 'Luke Cage'.
Pena plays a father who has been constantly plagued by dreams of a horrific alien invasion that wipes out his family - only to actually see it come to life before his very eyes.
The film lands on Netflix on July 27th.
