The planned Disney+ reboot/revival series of the early 2000s series has been thrown into the dumpster fire that is 2020.
Curse you, 2020, now you've taken 'Lizzie McGuire' too! This is not what our dreams are made of. The star of the original series Hilary Duff has shared a recent post on her social media, explaining that it is the very end of the character.
Duff, who played the role of Lizzie for two seasons totalling 65 episodes, as well as a movie, made her TV debut on the Disney channel series in 2001.
With Disney launching their own streaming service, and with various other reboots, revivals, and sequels in development, one which caught fans attention was the 'Lizzie McGuire' revival. However, Disney's press conference from last week which revealed all of their currently-in-development titles (see the full list here) had this one glaring omission.
Duff was set to return to the series, which would have depicted Lizzie as a 30-something adult many years later. The original cast of Jake Thomas, Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine, and Adam Lamberg were all set to reappear also.
Here's the statement which Duff released on her Instagram account. If you read between the lines, it's clear that Duff wasn't happy with the direction the character was being taken in.
"I've been so honoured to have the character of Lizzie in my life. She has made such a lasting impact on many, including myself.
"I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly & despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen.
"I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves.
"We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her. I'm very sad but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn't align.
"Hey now, this is what 2020s made of [emoji]"
