One of the newest movie releases on demand has been garnering praise from critics and viewers alike - and we might be getting a follow-up.
Director Clea DuVall is hoping that a 'Happiest Season' sequel will be in the pipeline in the future. The Hulu movie, which is available to buy or rent here in Ireland via YouTube, Google Play, and the Apple Store, has become a hit success for the American streamer.
Starring Kristen Stewart, Mackenzie Davis, Aubrey Plaza, Daniel Levy, and Alison Brie, 'Happiest Season' saw lesbian couple Abby and Harper spend Christmas with Harper's well-respected family. However, Harper failed to mention that she has a girlfriend, and so the entire holiday is spent trying to cover up their relationship, which is beginning to fall apart as Harper struggles with coming out of the closet.
In an interview with Variety, director of the comedy Clea DuVall says that she hopes to return to the characters in a future sequel. She told the publication: "I would love to do a sequel… I mean, I have a couple of ideas. We all had such a great time making the movie that we were talking about it then. But it was also just like, who knew if anybody would care about the movie or not? So I definitely am more than open to it."
Oh, we definitely would care for a sequel DuVall. Although the movie isn't perfect and falls into the snare trap of slapstick Christmas comedy more than a few times (Sloane vs. Harper), it was an enjoyable, festive watch none the less.
Having said that, should a sequel be in the works, we'd like to see all of the cast return - especially Daniel Levy from 'Schitt's Creek' and Aubrey Plaza from 'Parks and Recreation' - as it just wouldn't be the same without them.
Speaking of Plaza, the director had this to say about her role as Riley in the movie: "Because she’s so magnetic? I don’t think that you ever really think, like, everyone’s gonna fall in love with something. I didn’t think about that. I knew that people would love her in the movie. I knew she was amazing. And yeah, she’s a babe!"
Will there be a 'Happiest Season' sequel focussed on Riley? We'll have to wait and see.
