Girlboss, the Netflix comedy series based on the career of Sophia Amoruso, has been cancelled after just one season.
The series, which boasted Charlize Theron and Pitch Perfect screenwriter Kay Cannon as executive producers, received mixed reviews on its debut and follows a string of cancellations from Netflix. The Wachowskis' Sense8 and Baz Luhrmann's The Get Down were both unceremoniously cancelled; Sense8 after two seasons, The Get Down after one.
The news came from Amoruso herself, who made the announcement via Instagram. "While I’m proud of the work we did, I’m looking forward to controlling my narrative from here on out. It was a good show, and I was privileged to work with incredible talent, but living my life as a caricature was hard even if only for two months. Yes, I can be difficult. No, I’m not a dick. No, someone named Shane never cheated on me. It will be nice to someday tell the story of what’s happened in the last few years."
The series was based on Amoruso's New York Times bestselling biography, and followed her career of reselling vintage clothes on eBay which eventually grew to become a fashion chain known as NastyGal. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in late 2016 and was subsequently bought by BooHoo, with Amoruso stepping down as executive chairwoman of the company.
