The 'Game of Thrones' showrunners have lined up their next gig.
David Benioff and Dan Weiss of 'Game of Thrones' infamy are turning from fantasy to sci-fi.
They're adapting 'The Three-Body Problem' trilogy for Netflix.
Liu Cixin wrote the series of novels. They depict humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization.
The first book in the series earned high acclaim when it was published in China in 2008.
The English translation by Ken Liu was the first Asian novel to ever win a Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2014. The new series will also be in English.
Benioff and Weiss are collaborating with Alexander Woo ('The Terror: Infamy', 'True Blood') on the show.
Rian Johnson and producing partner Ram Bergman ('Looper', 'Knives Out', 'Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi') will also serve as exec producers; as will Brad Pitt and Rosamund Pike via their production companies.
Author Liu Cixinand translator Ken Liu are consulting producers.
Benioff and Weiss said in a statement: ""Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe.
"We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this to life for audiences around the world."
Woo said: "It’s a privilege to be adapting one of the great masterpieces of Chinese science-fiction.
"'The Three-Body Problem' trilogy combines so many things I love: rich, multi-layered characters and true existential stakes — all told as an elegant and deeply human allegory."
Liu added: "I set out to tell a story that transcends time and the confines of nations, cultures, and races; one that compels us to consider the fate of humankind as a whole.
"It is a great honor as an author to see this unique sci-fi concept travel and gain fandom across the globe and I am excited for new and existing fans all over the world to discover the story on Netflix."
Reportedly, the series will have a big budget.
Let's just hope Benioff and Weiss don't muck this one up...
