There are going to be female Orcs in Prime Video's 'LOTR: The Rings of Power'

Now female monsters can look ugly too

A load of new images of the upcoming season of the Prime Video production, which shines a spotlight on the most disgusting characters from the franchise.

We've got our very first look at the baddies from the upcoming TV series, and the ugly goblin/human hybrid is looking as brutish and as garish as ever. Oh, and it's not only male versions we'll be seeing this time around - there's going to be some female Orcs in the mix too.

We never actually stopped to think of why there were only male (or potentially non-binary) versions of the Middle-earth monster created by J.R.R. Tolkien, or how they reproduce (there's an Elven theory out there), but at least now we'll get to see some horrible-looking female versions of the evil creatures on screen. Were the female Orcs all wiped out? Maybe the series will explore this route.

Fans of the 'LOTR' franchise will be happy to know that the CGI effects used for the characters in 'The Hobbit' trilogy have been done away with for the series, and practical effects like the original trilogy have taken centre stage once again. Speaking with IGN, executive producer Lindsey Weber ('Star trek') said: "When they are up close to the camera, Orcs are really practical and almost exclusively. [...]

"We spent a lot of time talking about what it would mean to be an Orc in the Second Age. It felt appropriate that their look would be different, part of a wilder, more raw, Second Age, Middle-earth, closer to where the First Age ends. As we meet them, they're not yet organized into armies, they're a little more scattered and they've been scavenging. So it's just a different time in their total story."

Weber also teased what to expect from the female Orcs of the series: "There's some female Orcs that I truly loved. But there's one Orc in particular, who's very, very tall and strong, who has a particularly enjoyable fight with one of our Elven characters that I suspect will be, or hope will be a favourite among fans."

Prime Video's super expensive TV series will transport fans back in time for a prequel set thousands of years before the Peter Jackson trilogy. Morfydd Clark ('Saint Maud'), Robert Aramayo ('Behind Her Eyes'), Lenny Henry ('Broudchurch') and many more are in the cast.

'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' begins on Prime Video on September 2.
