The untitled Disney+ series will be produced by 'Black Panther' director Ryan Coogler.
Danai Gurira will lead a 'Black Panther' series for Disney+ in the near future. It will take place in the Kingdom of Wakanda, and will continue the storyline after the upcoming movie sequel.
According to reports, the character of Okoye will be one of the central roles of the series. In the three MCU movies she has appeared in thus far, she is the skilled general of the Dora Milaje and the head of Wakandan armed forces and intel. She is also the Queen of giving death scares (especially to Bruce Banner) and delivering one-liners ("Why was she up there all this time?").
'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' will be the character's next appearance, which is due for release on July 8, 2022. This untitled 'Black Panther' series is the first Disney+ production which will be set primarily in the fictional landlocked African country.
Danai Gurira is the first cast member to be announced for the series. The rest of the cast is likely to remain under wraps for the time being - or even until after 'Wakanda Forever' has been released in cinemas.
The upcoming superhero action sequel will not be recasting the late Chadwick Boseman, who played T'Challa/Black Panther for four MCU movies. instead, the sequel is believed to focus more on the King of Wakanda's younger sister Shuri (played by Letitia Wright). Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett and Martin Freeman are all expected to return.
Before playing the role of Okoya, Danai Gurira played Michonne on 'The Walking Dead' for eight seasons. She is currently attached to play Shirley Chisholm, a famed American politician, educator, and author, in an upcoming biopic.
