'Bright 2' is finally gaining momentum again.
'Bright' proved a big hit (in terms of views, not reviews) for Netflix back in 2017. The fantasy action flick was set in a world where human and mythical creatures co-exist.
Detective Daryl Ward (Will Smith) is forced to work with Nick Jakoby (Joel Edgerton), an Orc as well as a cop, on a case that involves protecting a magic wand.
The film came in the aftermath of the success of 'Suicide Squad' with director David Ayer behind both projects.
However Ayer won't be back for the sequel.
There's no bad blood behind the reasons for his departure. Ayer is simply busy rewriting to direct 'Dirty Dozen' for Warner Bros, and working on other projects for Netflix.
Who they've got lined up instead is exciting in any case, especially if you know your superhero movies.
Louis Leterrier is in talks to direct the Netflix sequel, while Smith and Edgerton are back as the mismatched police partners.
Leterrier is best-known for directing 'The Incredible Hulk' with Edward Norton (which many Marvel fans regard as one of the most underrated films of the franchise).
He also helmed the 2013 magic movie 'Now You See Me'. And he's already in the good books at Netflix having directed the series 'The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance'.
The script for the sequel is by Ayer and Evan Spiliotopoulos with a rewrite by T.S. Nowlin.
When released, the first 'Bright' movie broke records for Netflix with home viewings of approximately 60 million in its first week.
The record has since been superseded by 'Extraction'.
Sources say that the sequel picks up the travails of the odd partnership, setting it on an international stage.
