The Lighthouse
Two lighthouse keepers - one more seasoned (Willem Dafoe), the other a newbie (Robert Pattinson) - get stranded on an island in New England in the 1890s and gradually lose their sanity. This psychological horror is not for the faint of heart. But it's strikingly cinematic and that final shot stays with you looong after seeing the film.
Roma
You may have been among the numerous moviegoers who in spite of owning a Netflix account, never actually bothered to watch Oscar nominee 'Roma'. Well, we can't recommend it enough. It's a simple story following a year in the life of a maid in 1970s Mexico. The beautiful performances and stunning cinematography from director Alfonso Cuaron ('Gravity', 'Children of Men') elevate it to something else entirely.
Passing
Two high school friends reunite as adults, one of them "passing" as white. Their reignited friendship has consequences that neither anticipate. Much in said in glances and small remarks. Conversations sizzle as underlying frustrations and desires are revealed. Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson are extraordinary as the leads.
Malcolm and Marie
John David Washington and Zendaya play a filmmaker and his girlfriend who, after a movie premiere, come home and end up fighting as their relationship is tested. Fans of 'Euphoria' will want to check this out as Sam Levinson is the director of this movie and creator of the series.
Mank
'Mank' stars Gary Oldman as the screenwriter of 'Citizen Kane', Herman J. Mankiewicz. It should be watched as a companion piece to the Orson Welles masterpiece to be fully appreciated. 'Mank' is a love letter to classical Hollywood, reflecting the era in its music, dialogue, and zippy pacing. It highlights the glamour of the era as well as the flaws inherent to the studio system.
Schindler's List
This harrowing movie based on real life events bagged an impressive seven Academy Awards. Liam Neeson plays Oskar Schindler, an Austrian businessman who strives to save as many Jews as he can from concentration camps after witnessing the clearing of the Krakow Ghetto, by employing them in his factory. That little red coat scene remains an iconic image.
