Science fiction drama series 'Away' will not return for a second series on Netflix.
'Away' follows Hilary Swank on a space mission that involves assembling an international crew on the first mission to Mars.
She must also reconcile emotionally with leaving her family behind for a prolonged length of time.
The move to cancel was a surprise for fans.
Nielsen reported that 'Away' had good ratings upon release.
It debuted at number six upon its launch date of September 4th.
It subsequently spent several weeks in the top 10 of streaming shows.
Given the genre and space setting of the series, it may have been the case that the cost of the series weren't worth a renewal.
Aside from Swank, it also starred Josh Charles, Talitha Bateman, Mark Ivanir, Ato Essandoh, Ray Panthaki, Vivian Wu and Monique Curnen.
Andrew Hinderaker, who was a writer on 'Penny Dreadful', created the series based on an Esquire article by Chris Jones.
