Netflix has sealed a deal to reboot the popular 'Spy Kids' franchise, which started in 2001.
The franchise consisted of four films, starring Daryl Sabara and Alex PenaVega as Juni and Carmen Cortez, whose parents Gregorio (Antonio Bandares) and Ingrid (Carla Gugino) are secretly spies.
The films also feature Alan Cumming, Cheech Marin, Sylvester Stallone, Steve Buscemi and Danny Trejo.
As well as the three original films directed by Robert Rodriguez from 2001 to 2003 a fourth 4D instalment released in 2011 starring Jessica Alba and Joel McHale but flopped. Since, the franchise has been dormant.
In 2016, Netflix premiered a computer-animated series titled Spy Kids: Mission Critical, which ran for two seasons until 2018.
Spyglass Media owns the 'Spy Kids' franchise and remains on board with Netflix. Rodriguez, who created the original series, has returned for the upcoming reboot, which he will write and direct. Plot details have not yet been revealed and it's still unsure whether we'll see any of the old cast again.
Rodriguez has also directed 'From Dusk Til Dawn,' 'Sin City,' and 'Planet Terror.' He has also recently directed episodes of 'The Mandalorian' and 'The Book of Boba Fett'.
The next 'Spy Kids' film will mark Rodriguez’s second family film with Netflix following 2020’s 'We Can Be Heroes.'
