We've got our first look at 'Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power'

Last night was a big night for entertainment across the water. Not only did we get the Super Bowl and the half time show, we also got some incredible new trailers.

Most anticipated was the new teaser trailer of Prime Video's new 'Lord of the Rings' prequel series, 'The Rings of Power'.

Anyone who has watched the teaser might be asking themselves, "what in Middle Earth is going on in this trailer". Quite frankly, we don't blame you. It's been quite a while since the last LOTR movie was released (let's not talk about 'The Hobbit' movies), so it's not a surprise that there's some rustiness out there when it comes to the political ecosphere of Tolkien's world.

Even to avid fans and book readers there are some new characters to see in the short teaser. Here's what we do know about what is actually going on.

To get us started, it's important to know that 'Rings of Power' is set waaaaay before the events involving Frodo and co. Set in the Second Age, the series focuses on a world ruled by men, elves and dwarves in a period of relative peace and harmony.

However, the evil lord Sauron threatens the re-emergence of evil onto the land. The resulting happenings across the series lead up to the fateful battle scene that opens 'The Fellowship of the Ring'. Basically it will cover the forging of the rings and Sauron's temporary rise and fall.

Within the trailer we see what looks like the city of Númenor. The fall of this city is one of the key events in the Second Age and the series will probably highlight its destruction.

We also see a hobbit-like creature played by Markella Kavenagh. But that's actually a harfoot, the most common type of hobbit at the time.

We see some familiar faces on the Elven front, with Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo) appearing in a slightly more youthful age. Elves are technically immortal beings so it's no surprise seeing the same characters years before the time we're used to.

We also spot Gil-Galad, the Elven king and some dwarves like Prince Durin IV. Durin's father ruled over the kingdom of Khazad-dum, before it got Balrog-ed.

There's a lot of information to swallow in a very short teaser, even more than we've alluded to above. That leads us to think the upcoming series will be a rich in lore and history as its predecessors. We cannot wait for the release this September.
