The sci-fi series is about to get amped up, according to one of the young stars.

If exploding rodents, zombie lifeguards, and giant monsters attacking kids in Starcourt mall weren't scary enough for you, then you're in luck. 'Stranger Things' season four will be much darker than what we've seen so far, according to Finn Wolfhard who plays Mike Wheeler on the show.

The fourth season is expected to see the teens leave their "safe" little town of Hawkins and hit the open road as they search for answers. At the end of season three, a now powerless Eleven left the town with the Byers family - but she and Mike plan to meet up for Thanksgiving.

Wolfhard said on CBC's 'Q with Tom Power' show: "Every season it gets darker. Really, I will say with Season 3 I was like, this is the darkest season that there’ll ever be, like the exploding rats and everything. But really, Season 4 so far, it’s the darkest season there’s ever been.

"Every year, it gets amped up. Every year it gets funnier and darker and sadder, and everything. Every year, they amp it up."

Over a year ago on Valentine's Day, the first teaser 'Stranger Things' season four was released, giving us a glimpse of Jim Hopper's shocking return.

The series was forced to pause production last year, due to everything, and appears to still be filming. A number of new castmates were announced last November.

There's been no release date for 'Stranger Things' season four on Netflix yet. However, given that the series has followed the pattern of release dates in the summer, autumn, followed by the summer again for season three, we reckon an autumn/winter release for this new season is on the cards. Eleven and Mike said they'd meet up at Thanksgiving, so maybe this will be the jumping-off point.
