It may not reach screens for a good while yet, but the anticipation is already building for Disney+'s as-yet untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
While there's been a number of behind-the-scenes news announced on the run-up to production start, the rumour mill has already kicked into hyperspace. According to LRM and subsequently picked up by TheMarySue and ScreenRant, none other than Hayden Christensen himself is due to reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker in the series.
What's more, the "top-shelf rumour" also points out that Christensen's role will not just be as a cameo, but as a series regular. This, frankly, is where we start to lose a bit of faith in the rumour. Sure, a cameo would make complete sense - but a series regular? Unless huge chunks of the show is set in the past, it seems unlikely.
For one, the purported time period that the series is set in means that Anakin Skywalker is definitely not dead (from a certain point of view), meaning that he wouldn't be there as a Force ghost. The only way this rumour makes sense is if a large portion of the show is set during around time of the events of 'Attack of the Clones' and 'Revenge of the Sith'.
What's more, 'Revenge of the Sith' was 15 years ago, when Hayden Christensen was 24 years old. He's now 39 years old, and has aged naturally. So what's the solution? Digitally de-age him? Who knows. As well as this, if we're talking cameos from Obi-Wan Kenobi's past, how about calling up Liam Neeson to reprise his role as Qui-Gon Jinn, then?
After all, the last time Obi-Wan and Yoda talk, there's a mention of Obi-Wan being trained to commune with Qui-Gon, so that cameo would make a lot more sense than Anakin Skywalker.
As ever, Disney+ hasn't yet commented on the rumour, and likely won't until an official casting announcement comes - and who knows when that will be?
