If there was a list of roles that Nicolas Cage was born to play, or at the very least, would be incredible at, voicing an alcoholic dragon who loves 'Flashdance' is somewhere near the top.
You can just hear it now, can't you? Nicolas Cage, swishing around vodka in his mouth to get in the mood, talking about how Michael Sembello's 'Maniac' is a song about freedom of expression and bodily autonomy. Yes, yes, it makes perfect sense. Well, it's now a reality.
Deadline reports that 'Highfire', a new series by Amazon Prime is now in the works and is based on Eoin Colfer's novel of the same name. Colfer is perhaps best known for writing the 'Artemis Fowl' series of novels, and the.... well, that movie that came out of it. Less said about that, the better.
The novel is described as 'True Detective' by way of 'Pete's Dragon', which doesn't make sense at all - but like so many things in Cage's filmography, you just have to go with it. The story follows Lord Highfire, once the lord of all the dragons, who now lives in a swamp in Louisiana and survives by watching TV, drinking vodka and keeping out of people's way. That all changes, of course, when he crosses path with a teenager who's in trouble with local criminals.
Interestingly, both this and the upcoming miniseries about Joe Exotic marks Cage's first foray into TV and streaming. His recent movies, such as 'Mandy' and 'Color Out Of Space', have won him some of his best reviews in years and while he still does do the odd straight-to-video tosh, he's a long way from the likes of 'Left Behind' and so on.
No air date has been set for 'Highfire' as of yet.
