The Irish X-Factor star is hoping to end Ireland's recent dismal Eurovision run.

Ballyfermot native Mary Byrne has thrown her hat in the ring to represent Ireland at next year's Eurovision song contest. Songwriter Karl Broderick has written a song for Byrne which, as of now, must be considered among the favourites to get through next year's ceremony in Austria.

Speaking to the Herald, Byrne said: "Eurovision is one of my guilty pleasures. It's an honour to have been put forward."

The process for the selection of who will represent Ireland next year will differ from previous years. Previously a panel of five whittled down the acts to a shortlist which then went to public vote but this time around but this time the public can submit any entry whatsoever to a judging panel for selection.

Still though, as evidenced by recent Eurovisions, a gimmick would certainly help - and if Jedward can't even come close, we're all out of ideas.
