You might think the Dalai Lama is an odd choice to go on stage before Lionel Richie, but hey - who cares? It's Glastonbury.

The 14th Lama, who is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, celebrated his 80th birthday in front of a crowd of over 175,000 people.

Invited onto the stage by punk-rocker matriarch Patti Smith, his Holiness thanked the crowd for their well-wishes and praised Smith's 'voice and movement' in a stirring speech.

Take a look.

The Dalai Lama also happened to be next door in his dressing room to none other than our own Hozier.

This picture, snapped by one of Hozier's band members, sees the Lama looking right down the lens.

Bless him, the 'oul sod.
