The second Villagers album {Awayland} is among the twelve nominees for this year's Mercury Prize, the award given the best British or Irish album release of the year.

Conor O'Brien, frontman of the Dublin-based band, picked up a nomination back in 2010 for the debut Villagers album Becoming A Jackal but ultimately lost out to The xx.

Villagers will be joined on the list by James Blake, David Bowie, Laura Marling, Foals and more. London Grammar are conspicuous in their absence, with speculation today having them listed as among the favourites to win.

The winner of the 2013 Mercury Prize will be announced at a ceremony in London's Roundhouse on October 30th next.

Previous Irish nominees have included Lisa Hannigan for Sea Sew in 2009 and Fionn Regan for The End of History in 2007. Snow Patrol and The Thrills have both also been nominees in the past.

So far, the bookies have installed Arctic Monkeys, Laura Marling and Foals as favourites to win the award.
