The White House is poised to issue a response to an online petition demanding Justin Bieber's deportation to his native country of Canada, which garnered a staggering 200,000 signatures.
Any petition which generates over 100,000 signatures has to, by law, be acknowledged by the White House but it's very unlikely that they will revoke Bieber's Green Card on account of the series of incidents the 19-year-old has had with the law lately.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, White House spokesperson Jay Carney said: "That process will occur, as is our commitment. There will be a response when the threshold is crossed. That response will come, I’m sure, relatively soon. I don’t have one now on matters related to visas. I would refer you to DHS."
The petition reads, as per NME: "We would like to see the dangerous, reckless, destructive, and drug abusing, Justin Bieber deported and his green card revoked. He is not only threatening the safety of our people but he is also a terrible influence on our nation's youth. We the people would like to remove Justin Bieber from our society."
Bieber has rarely been out of the headlines in recent weeks. Last November rumours of an alleged tryst with a Brazilian prostitute began to circulate online, followed by a hoax on his official Twitter account that he was quitting music on Christmas Day. Then there was the 'egg incident' which led to drugs being found in his home and, more recently, the arrest for DUI and resisting arrest in Florida.
There's very little chance that Bieber will have his Green Card revoked due to what could still be mostly described as a series of youthful indiscretions perpetrated by a snotty, egotistical rich kid. He may be a less-than-virtuous character but there are more relevant people who commit a lot more serious crimes who could more suitably feel the wrath of the US government.
Don't get us wrong; we aren't starting a #Justice4Biebs campaign, all we're saying is that there are far more egregious examples of over-privilege and excess at whom we can vent our fury.
