Barney McKenna, one of the founding members of The Dubliners, has passed away at the age of 72 in his home in Howth this morning, Thursday April 5th.

The tenor banjo player, who also played mandolin and melodeon, served time with The Chieftains before before The Dubliners formed in 1962 - a band he remained with ever since. In fact, McKenna played at Croke Park as recently as ten days ago as part of The Dubliners 50th anniversary celebrations.

Barney will be remembered fondly as one of the most influential figures in Irish music history and spent a lifetime travelling the world promoting the music he loved so dearly.
