Taylor Swift has received glowing reviews for her new album 'The Tortured Poets Department', but the star's reported massive carbon footprint is threatening to overshadow her success.
In recent months, you may recall that a 21-year-old college student, Jack Sweeney, has been tracking Swift's flights and even ran a Twitter account detailing the various trips she took in her two private jets (one of which has since been sold) - which her lawyers attempted to block on the grounds of privacy, issuing him with a cease-and-desist letter.
However, Florida native Sweeney has not been deterred by the threat of legal action and has continued to monitor the flight data. In a new YouTube video, he claims that Swift travelled a whopping 178,000 miles last year alone - the equivalent of flying around the world seven times, and around 170 flights.
Sweeney also said that he has not heard from the pop star's lawyers since the cease-and-desist letter last December.
"Swift’s two private jets flew 178,000 miles in 2023 equivalent to flying around the earth 7 times, emitting ~ 1200 tons of C02 in the process," the video concludes. "That’s 83 times the average American."
While Swift is not the first musician to spend lots of time on a plane, at least others - like Coldplay - have acknowledged the damage that lengthy tours have on the environment, and have taken measures to counteract that with an 'eco-friendly' tour, including the planting of trees and a dancefloor that generates electricity.
Swift, meanwhile, has remained quiet about the impact that her extensive travel has had.
Sweeney, meanwhile, has noted the 'uncanny coincidence' that Swift's private jet has been used less since news of the cease-and-desist letter went public, instead preferring to take charter planes.
The most shocking thing of all is that Swift was not even the worst offender - as Travis Scott, Kim Kardashian, Beyonce and Jay-Z and Elon Musk all took more private jet flights than she did in 2023.
