Just days after news came that his collaborative project, Dark Night of the Soul, with Dangermouse will finally get an official release, Sparklehorse man Mark Linkous has committed suicide.

Linkous' publicist confirmed the new to Rolling Stone magazine on Saturday. A statement from his family reads, "It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today. We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts. May his journey be peaceful, happy and free. There’s a heaven and there’s a star for you."

After four Sparklehorse albums, as well as production work on albums by Nina Persson and Daniel Johnston, Linkous was nearly finished a new album that was due to be released on Anti- Records, before he took his own life with a gunshot to the heart.
