American soul singer Ben E. King has died at the age of 76.

The North Carolina-born, Harlem-raised soul singer passed away yesterday, his publicist confirmed.

King began his career with soul group The Drifters, co-writing songs like 'There Goes My Baby', before enjoying huge success as a solo singer. He scored his biggest hit at the age of 23 in 1961 with 'Stand By Me', the song co-written with legendary songwriting team Leiber and Stoller.

He had been touring actively up until 2013.
