Tragic breaking news this evening as it has been announced that Sinead O'Connor has died at the age of 56.
The Dublin-born singer, undoubtedly one of the greatest musical talents to emerge from Ireland, came to prominence in the late 1980s with her debut album 'The Lion and the Cobra', and shot to global fame with her cover of Prince's 'Nothing Compares 2 U' in 1990.
She had a long and bountiful career but one that was beset by personal difficulties, many of them documented in her 2021 memoir 'Rememberings'.
She had publicly struggled since the untimely death of her son Shane in early 2022.
Details on this story are still emerging but tributes have already begun pouring in on social media.
Her family released a statement that read: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."
She is survived by her three children Jake, Roisin and Yeshua.
