Anyone who's read Patti Smith's memoir 'Just Kids' will be aware of just how fascinating the punk icon's life has been.

The book, published in 2010, was largely an account of Smith's relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who died in 1989.

The story has caught the eye of US network Showtime, who plan to turn it into a series that will be adapted by John Logan, the man behind Penny Dreadful. Apparently, he and Smith have been working on an adaptation as far back as 2011.

Showtime president David Nevis said yesterday: "Just Kids is one of my favourite memoirs of all time. Not only is it a fascinating portrait of artists coming of age, but it's also an inspiring story of friendship, love and endurance.

"I'm so thrilled that Patti Smith will bring her unique voice to writing the scripts along with the gifted John Logan, who has been doing such a phenomenal job with Penny Dreadful for us."

Most importantly, who's going to be cast as Smith? An established actor, or an unknown? The bets are on now...
