Al Pacino will reportedly play legendary producer Phil Spector in a HBO movie about his life. The film will presumably follow Spector through the peak of his success producing hits for the likes of The Ronettes, The Beatles and Ike and Tina Turner to present day, as he serves a 19-years-to-life prison sentence for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson at his home in 2003.

Pacino previously worked with HBO on 'You Don't Know Jack', picking up an Emmy Award for his portrayal of euthanasia advocator Dr. Jack Kevorkian. HBO say the Spector movie is still in its early stages – it doesn't even have a name yet - but will be directed by 'Rain Man' director Barry Levinson and penned by 'Ronin' and 'Wag The Dog' screenwriter David Mamet.

Pacino's agent John Le Burnham told the New York Times that the Godfather actor "saw a very interesting character to play, and he likes the sensibility of David and Barry."
