It is one of the biggest mistakes a touring artist visiting Irish shores can make - but that hasn’t stopped numerous artists from referring to Ireland as being part of the UK over the years.
In most cases, the faux-pas had led to nothing more than a round of good-natured booing before the act in question corrects their error.
However, Noah Kahan managed to annoy a lot of Irish fans with a rather more permanent mistake, after unveiling his new tour merch.
The ‘Stick Season’ singer is set to play the 3Arena on February 8th, and took to social media to unveil a new series of patches that fans can buy on his European tour.
It includes a green patch for his Dublin gig that commits the grievous error of referring to ‘Dublin, UK’ rather than Ireland.
One fan on Instagram told the singer: “fix the dublin one people didn’t die for a design company to call us the uk”, while another said: “Man I love you, but read up on Irish History 🙃 Dublin ain't in the UK.”
Others took a less sympathetic tone, telling the 27-year-old Vermot native: “DUBLIN , UK ? CANCELLED”, and saying: “You gots to be kidding😂😂 not Noah Kahan revoking our independence with a badge 😭🇮🇪🤡”
Kahan later posted an apology to TikTok, saying “To all my Irish fans: I am terribly sorry about the mistake, which you have every right to be offended by. I did not make the parches [sic] and did not do my due diligence of checking them thoroughly before they were released on socials.”
The apology seems to have appeased the aggrieved fans for now, but the pressure is now on for Kahan to don full tricolour suit and sing Amhran na bFhiann in perfect Gaeilge at the 3Arena in a few weeks. The ball is in your court, Noah.
