U2 released the animated video for new single 'Get Out of Your Own Way' yesterday, but it didn't take long for it to stir quite a bit of controversy.
The video, which was directed by Israeli graffiti collective Broken Fingaz, takes a look at the world's current political situation and needless to say, all is not rosy. It particularly condemns Trump and sees members of the KKK outside the White House and hidden in plain sight in everyday situations.
"2017 for us was the year fascists worldwide felt confident enough to raise their heads again, encouraged by Trump and other world leaders, who use people's fear to build more walls and segregation," the collective said.
"The song is both a personal letter and a clarion cry to the global situation, and in the same way, we've combined our psychedelic pop style with political imagery; shot entirely analogue, using paper cut and stop motion animation techniques in collaboration with Adam Albo, who edited the video.”
One group that it caused particular consternation with was the people behind the notorious Infowars website, who condemned the video. Their supporters alleged that the band were "smearing our president", according to one tweeter, with another accusing them of attempting "to stay relevant and edgy by trashing America and @POTUS", denouncing them as a "propaganda mouthpiece for Leftist fascism".
On the other hand, fans praised the video for its 'beautiful art' and 'great impact'.
