Delorean were victims of what police are referring to as a "virtual kidnapping" in Mexico City, though all four members are now safe and were unharmed.

According to reports in Spanish newspaper El Pais, a group of kidnappers posed as police officers and informed the band that they were in danger in their current hotel and advised them to move to another. At this new hotel, the kidnappers confiscated the band's phones and called each band member's family to demand a one-off ransom payment of 5 million pesos, around €285,000.

The band are now "in good shape and at liberty", according to Mexican police, but exact details on what happened are still relatively unclear. The El Pais report suggests, though, that the band were never in any real danger and were victims of a recently-popular scam in which family members are duped into believing that a kidnapping has taken place.

According to security expert Samuel Gonzalez, "It is a form of extortion. It's a trick, but it works."
