If you haven't heard his name already, prepare to hear it a lot in future. 21-year-old Sam Smith has been revealed as the winner of the BBC Sound of 2014, following nicely in the footsteps of previous winners like Adele, Jessie J and Haim.

The East Hertfordshire native has already visited the summit of the charts when he lent his vocals to Naughty Boy's hit 'La La La', as well as featuring on the Disclosure track 'Latch'.

The singer commented on the win, saying that he was "completely speechless" to have beaten the likes of Ella Eyre, Banks, Samph and George Ezra to the award which is judged by 170 broadcaster, bloggers, journalist and other industry professionals.

Smith said in a statement: "The shortlist is full of so many talented artists and it's a huge compliment to be recognised by the industry and the BBC in this way. I'm completely overwhelmed."

Since his releases with Naughty Boy and Disclosure, Smith has gone on to release his debut EP entitled Nirvana. Speaking to the Observer about his music, he commented on how he feels uncomfortable singing about love when, as he puts it, has yet to experience it for himself.

"On 'Latch' I was singing about love", he said, "but I've never physically experienced it. And I'm kind of sick of listening to albums about the turmoil of relationships, never having had one. So I wanted to write an album for people who have never been in love. I want to be a voice for lonely people."

Smith's debut album In The Lonely Hour will be released in the spring.
