Yesterday, a Buzzfeed story broke about how R. Kelly is allegedly brainwashing a group of young women and keeping them in various properties that he owns in 'cult'-like conditions for his own benefit.
The parents of one 19-year-old girl approached reported Jim DeRogatis for his help in exposing Kelly, and needless to say the Internet had a feeding frenzy in the wake of the story's publication.
Now, the 50-year-old Kelly has issued a statement through his lawyer saying that he 'unequivocally denies' the report and intends to clear his name.
His lawyer Linda Mensch told Pitchfork: "Mr. Robert Kelly is both alarmed and disturbed by the recent revelations attributed to him. Mr. Kelly unequivocally denies such accusations and will work diligently and forcibly to pursue his accusers and clear his name."
DeRogatis had obtained an earlier statement from Mensch during the course of his investigation, which accused people of trying to 'defame' Kelly. "He works hard to become the best person and artist he can be," she said. "It is interesting that stories and tales debunked many years ago turn up when his goal is to stop the violence; put down the guns; and embrace peace and love. I suppose that is the price of fame. Like all of us, Mr. Kelly deserves a personal life. Please respect that."
